The Critiques is an ongoing series of informal gatherings that offer emerging artists the opportunity to present their work to an invited guest critic. These open forums provide artists with important critical feedback in a discussion format.
Adrienne Edwards works with Performa, the visual art performance biennial, and is pursuing her PhD in Performance Studies at New York University where she is a Corrigan Doctoral Fellow. She has written on the work of Lorraine O’Grady and Tracey Rose, and is a contributor to the exhibition catalogues for Clifford Owens: Anthology for MoMA/PS1 and Fore for the the Studio Museum in Harlem.
Daniel Bejar is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Bejar’s practice utilizes intervention, performance, photography, and sculpture, to appropriate historical and cultural residue as strategy to evoke the past into the present, which provides an opportunity to explore unresolved histories while posing critical questions. Bejar received his BFA from the Ringling College of Art & Design, Sarasota, FL and an MFA from the State University of New York, New Paltz in 2007. Bejar is currently an 2011-2012 Artist-in-Residence in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace Program, and in 2011 Bejar was selected to Smack Mellon, Brooklyn, NY Hot Picks program, and recently completed a residency at SOMA, Mexico City D.F.. Bejar has also participated in residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space Program, and the AIM Program at the Bronx Museum of Art, NY. Bejar’s work has been exhibited internationally, with recent venues including El Museo Del Barrio, NY sixth Bienal “The (S) Files Bienal 2011”, SITE Santa Fe, NM; University of New Haven, CT; Artnews Projects, Berlin, Germany; and Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY.
Jessica Ann Peavy is a interdisciplinary artist working primarily in video, photography and performance. She completed her BFA in Film from Tisch School of the Arts at NYU and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts. She has exhibited across the country including Rush Arts, PPOW gallery, The Kitchen, The Contemporary Art Museum Houston and Spelman College Museum of Fine Art where she was included in the acclaimed exhibition Cinema Remixed and Reloaded: Black Women and the Moving Image Since 1970. She also took part in the International Black Media Festival London, and had solo exhibitions with Smack Mellon Gallery, Momenta Art, and Collette Blanchard Gallery.
Peavy has presented at the CUNY Graduate Center and Cinewomen NY on the role of women in cinema and Columbia University’s Conversations Across Cultures public art conference. She has held residencies with Smack Mellon, Harvestworks, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, (LMCC ) and received grants and awards from Franklin Furnace, the Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts. Peavy currently lives and works in New York City.
